I thought segregation ended decades ago however if you go to the gym segregation still exists, this time it's between males and females. So why?
We are all used to seeing females on the cardio equipment or in classes and males over in the free weight area. Of course there's always a few females and males that don't mind sharing the entire gym with everyone, but typically not.
So why don't the sides mix? Mostly because not enough women lift free weights. Women are afraid to "get big" or are intimidated to go over to "that side" of the gym. This is why women get a stereotype of taking classes or reading and gossiping on the elliptical or treadmill, and males of lifting weights.
But guess what ladies you should totally go to the weight side! Lifting weights for women is the best thing you can do to loose extra pounds and become more tone. This doesn't mean lifting 5lbs... You are allowed to lift more!
Most women think lifting heavier weights makes you "big", but you have to lift pretty often, have a strict diet, and take supplements to become bulky. The average woman won't become bulky from lifting but instead will shed more pounds and become lean and tone. Gaining muscle helps burn fat so once you hit that plateau of cardio it's time to hit the weights. Now to cross that dreadful line from cardio to weights at the gym.
Let me guess you have no idea where to start. Well guess what guys aren't naturals either, but usually start at an earlier age then females. I couldn't count how many times I've gone to the gym and watched guys try to lift a heavier weight then needed just to show off strength, but in return have horrible form. What about the guys who walk over look around stand there lift one weight a few times and walk away. Being a male doesn't make them any more knowledgable then a female. We all have to start somewhere.
The best place to start is to pick up 2 5lb weights look up 3-4 workouts that are simple and basic and go! The more you read and research the easier it gets. My most favorite book is the body sculpting bible for women. It taught me a lot about form, supersets, working out w weights, and eating healthy. If you ever need help this book gives you detailed workouts and diet help, it taught me many things about lifting.
So ladies don't be afraid to cross that line at the gym and lift what you can. It's only good for you and it only gets easier. Trust me if you do it with confidence no one will question why you're there.
I challenge you to lift! To stay active, be positive and get stronger!
Don't be afraid to lift heavy, you're stronger than you think
